Narrower tyres generally require higher pressures than wider ones, and heavier riders typically require higher pressures than lighter ones.

Tyres need to grip the road in order to provide traction and control, but if the tyre is too hard, it will not deform to the road surface and less rubber will be in contact with the road, reducing grip. Therefore, it is generally recommended to run a tyre pressure that allows the tyre to compress slightly when you sit on the bike. Research has shown that the ideal amount of compression is 15% of the tyre's total height, although this can be difficult to measure accurately.

Comfortable tyre pressures can also be faster tyre pressures. For many years, it was believed that harder tyres were faster because they had less rolling resistance in laboratory tests. However, on real-world roads, softer tyres absorb vibration better and this vibration can slow you down significantly. As a result, a softer, more comfortable tyre may actually roll faster than a harder one.

Factors That Affect Tyre Pressure

In addition to the factors mentioned above, there are several other considerations that can affect tyre pressure. These include:

  • Road conditions: On rough or uneven roads, you may need to lower your tyre pressure slightly to improve grip and comfort. On smooth roads, you can generally increase the pressure to improve speed.

  • Tyre width: Wider tyres can run at lower pressures without as much risk of pinch flats (a type of puncture caused by the tyre bottoming out against the rim) as narrower tyres.

  • Rider weight: Heavier riders may need to increase tyre pressure slightly to prevent pinch flats, while lighter riders can generally run lower pressures.

  • Tyre type: Some tyres are designed to be run at lower pressures for improved grip and comfort, while others are optimized for high pressures and speed. Be sure to check the manufacturer's recommendations for the correct pressure range for your tyre.

Tips for Maintaining Proper Tyre Pressure

To maintain proper tyre pressure on your road bike, follow these tips:

  • Use a pressure gauge: A pressure gauge is the most accurate way to determine the pressure of your tyres. Look for a gauge that is easy to read and has a range that covers the recommended pressure for your tyres.

  • Check the pressure regularly: Tyre pressure can change over time due to temperature fluctuations and other factors. Check the pressure at least once a week and before long rides to ensure that it is within the recommended range.

  • Use the correct pump: Make sure to use a pump that is compatible with your valves 

Inflating Your Tyres

When inflating your tyres, it is important to use a pump that is compatible with your valves. Most road bikes have Presta valves, which are thin and have a small nut on the top. Some pumps have a switch or lever that allows you to switch between Schrader (found on most car tyres) and Presta valves. Be sure to set the pump to the correct setting before attaching it to the valve.

To inflate the tyre, first remove the valve cap and then attach the pump to the valve. If you are using a floor pump, stand on the pump pedal with one foot and use the other foot to press down on the handle. If you are using a hand pump, use both hands to pump the handle up and down.

As the tyre starts to inflate, check the pressure gauge to make sure that it is within the recommended range. If you are using a floor pump with a pressure gauge, you can easily see the pressure as you pump. If you are using a hand pump or a floor pump without a pressure gauge, you will need to stop pumping periodically to check the pressure by pressing on the tyre with your thumb or using a separate pressure gauge.

If you overinflate the tyre, release some of the air by pressing on the valve with your thumb until the pressure is within the recommended range. If you underinflate the tyre, simply continue pumping until the pressure is correct.
